It’s almost vacation time, and many people go on road trips to Florida. But one of the most traveled places in Georgia is Macon! Whether you love or hate it, Macon can have some fine places to visit for the best restaurant experiences. My personal favorite is a Japanese restaurant called “Shogun”.
What is Shogun

“Shogun Japanese Steak & Sushi” is a wonderful hibachi and sushi spot that serves the most mouth-watering and delectable food. It’s located at 900 Northwoods Plaza, you can find it on top of the giant hill. Their hours are 11:30 AM to 2 PM and then 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM on weekdays. 4:30 PM to 10 PM on Saturday. 4:30 PM to 9 PM on Sunday. They also usually take major holidays off, so check the hours before you go.
From their official website, they say:
“When you’re craving delicious hibachi or sushi, Shogun Japanese Steak & Sushi Bar is the right place to be. We proudly incorporate Japanese tradition, food, and hospitality to all of Macon, GA. Our extensive menu offers your favorite dishes to choose from and is friendly for people of all ages. All of our chefs are professionally trained and have a passion for Japanese food, so you can expect nothing short of perfection.”
My Menu Recommendations
The menu is vast and very extensive. Lots of options to decide from that you can’t get at other Japanese places for some miles. Here are my personal favorites.
Appetizers
Let’s start with appetizers. The best appetizer will have to be the “Fried Crab Sticks”. You get this delicious crab meat that is battered in tempura. They serve a sauce alongside it, which is soy and yum-yum sauce mixed. It goes perfectly with it.
Next is the “Clear Soup”. It is a chicken broth-based soup that mixes vegetables and mushrooms. It is topped with crunchy, yummy noodles! I recommend putting some soy sauce and a little pepper to give it a little extra pop!
Last of the appetizers is the very nice “House Salad”. I don’t mind this salad, especially since I didn’t start eating salads till recently. It’s a salad served with a very yummy ginger dressing that will make your mouth water. Totally is a must!
Sushi
Now it gets interesting! Shogun has some of the best sushi in all of middle Georgia. They have a wide variety of sushis, nirigiris, and samples. I will only be talking about the sushi though, for those are the best.
The first one I always get is called “Pretty Woman”. It’s a beautiful roll that looks like a bunch of women with long hair. Inside it is a crab salad with cucumber. What’s on top really makes it. On top are four kinds of fish, mango, avocado, yellow tail sauce, spicy mayo, and masago! I’m sure you can ask them what the four kinds of fish are, I’m sure two are tuna and salmon. The mango adds a nice sweet taste and texture that compliments the avocado. The yellow tail and spicy mayo sauce are so good that they just add the extra “oomph” needed. For extra texture, the masago is just right. One of the best sushis I have ever tasted.

Next is probably my second favorite. The “Poison Spider” is a delightful filling roll that is very crunchy and has a great slight spicy kick to it. Inside is deep-fried softshell crab, lettuce, avocado, and cucumber. The softshell crab is very delicious and mainly my favorite thing about this roll. On top of the roll is spicy crab and eel sauce, which both complement each other nicely.

Last for this section is some people’s favorite if you love spice! The “TNT” is a spicy roll that just explodes in your mouth with flavors and a great amount of spiciness! Inside are spicy tuna, shrimp, and crab. All are separated and wrapped together to look like a block of TNT. Very cool! On top is spicy mayo, hot sauce, and eel sauce. All sauces bring a punch to your taste buds that just make the flavors dance on your tongue.

All in all, they have over 40 sushis to choose from, and all are very tasty and so varied from cooked to raw that some will fit your taste!
Entrées
Now it’s time for the main course! Shogun has more than 10 different entrées, wow! So, which ones are the best? Well, since the entrées are all so different and different people have a preference for meat, I’ll make it simple. I’ll pick one beef, chicken, and pork entrée. So you all know which meat dish is best!
For the best beef dish, I selected the “Bulgogi”. Fun fact, bulgogi means “fire meat”! Which is very fitting, because it’s a dish of thinly sliced beef served on a sizzling hot platter! Talk about hot. It’s a very delicious meal though, the sauces and seasoning that they use for the meat is absolutely mouth watering.
My favorite chicken dish of theirs is the “Teriyaki Chicken”! Can’t go wrong with a hot and ready, tasty, crunchy teriyaki chicken. The sweet and savory flavors of the teriyaki sauce perfectly blend with the tender chicken, making each bite a delightful experience. Plus, the crispy exterior adds a satisfying crunch that enhances the dish even more.
Last, the absolute best pork dish is the “Ton Katsu”. Ton Katsu is a word combination in Japanese. Ton meaning “pork” and “katsu” being short for “katsuresu” meaning “cutlet “. The ton katsu is deep-fried pork, sliced, and served in a special delicious sauce. It’s crunchy, savory, and very tasty. It’ll fill you right up!
The Service
Now that we have discussed everything that you might want to eat there, you probably are wondering something. “How is the service?” Well, this section will be short because it’s perfect. They always treat you like family, and will go out of their way to make sure you have a great experience there. Everyone is so polite and the food always comes out at a steady pace. There is a reason I’ve been going there since I was a little one.
Probably the main draw for most people as well is the hibachi grills! You can bring your family or friends for a nice dinner and show at one of the many hibachi tables. I personally am terrified of fire, but many others seem to always have fun with the shows. I often like the funny gags they do with the food like making a train or volcano out of onions.
They also offer birthday celebrations! They bring out a giant taiko drum and play a traditional happy birthday song just for you if it’s a birthday party!
Conclusion
In general, from what I’ve experienced and seen, without a doubt, you will enjoy yourself at Shogun in Macon. Prices are fair and not overly expensive. You can spend about 100 dollars on average for a family of four.
Thank you for reading this! Look forward to more restaurant and food reviews. Love you all, stay positive!
